Day 21: Anchors Away?
Back in the Plaza de Colón, we´re taking a look at one of the four anchor sculptures. Anchor is not the first thing I thought of when I looked at these sculptures. In fact, I used to think they had something to do with the Spanish Civil War. This is not so. Dedicated to the "discovery" of the "new world", the monument is called Monument to the Discovery of America, and is made up of three concrete sculptures, named The Prophecies, The Discovery and The Genesis. Each sculpture is covered with quotes from famous Hispanic texts. The Discovery has excerpts from Chilam Balam (The Book of the Jaguar), the Maya prophecy that stated the Mayan people would face dangerous conquistadores from the West.
