Anywhere

I'd know that distinctive white metal frame design anywhere. It's Calatrava.

Santiago Calatrava, my favourite architect, from Valencia, my favourite city in Spain, has a building in Toronto, one of my favourite cities in Canada.

Nature is a recurring theme in his buildings, and the Allen Lambert Galleria in Toronto evokes a tree-lined street.

I also love the Arts and Science complex in Valencia - you can see an eye, a bird, a globe, trees, a ship, fish, a whale skeleton, a cathedral - just squint your eye and imagine a little.

No matter what they remind me of, they are always light-filled, airy structures where I feel almost more outside than in.

  1. Both are stunning. Glad you mentioned the Arts and Science complex in Valencia. I believe he also designed the Puente del Alamillo in Seville.
