End of February Snapshot

What I'm Into at HopefulLeigh

On my nightstand: A whole lot of Sebastian Faulks, who is one of my favourite authors. I've just started the final book of his France trilogy (the books are all stand-alone, but share themes including WWII and France). I highly recommend any of his books, but especially Birdsong (the second in the trilogy) and A Week in December (set in London). I wrote a bit about them here. I got into the France trilogy by reading a trilogy of my own (a re-read of Chocolat by Joanne Harris, and The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier). I'm also working my way through the Museo del Prado collection guide - that will take some time!

On Screen: I can't say I watched anything great on TV - lately when I turn it on I just fall asleep on the couch! I did see Glitch, which was a fun film.

On my MP3: Norah Jones. Her entire Don't Know Why album, it's such a (relatively) oldie but a goodie, AND it's good inside-music - the weather is very much encouraging me to stay inside - it's cold, windy and wet.

In my browser: My cousin's blog. She's on a 317-day long journey to find the awesomeness in every day. If you're feeling blue or you just like reading about awesomeness, check her out!

On my plate: So many awesome meals you'd be jealous if I named them all. I cooked my way through the February issue of Chatelaine. Highlights: maple quinoa and chicken. Bison stew. Raw Brussels sprouts and green apple salad (so crunchy!). I wish one of these cupcakes were on my plate - if you're in London, you can get them made-to-order or pick one up at Fairly Square. She also does cakes...

In my mug: Homemade ginger-honey-lemon tisanes and nettle infusions. Everyone except for me has been sick or is sick or is getting sick. I'm not getting sick!

On my mind: A good sermon that's left me wondering what or who the "foxes" in my life are, and trying to avoid being someone else's fox. Fox, despite today's distorted ideas, is not a compliment. Why, in movies, books, on TV, in the news, do we value cunning? Who wants to be a sneaky trickster?

In my agenda: There's some time carved out for pen-to-paper journal time, which I haven't been doing lately but miss. A trip to Museo del Prado. A coffee with a new friend.

On my to-do list: Hanging things, mainly art. Also mirrors and photos. We recently painted and haven't gotten around to putting things back up.

  1. Sebastian Faulks is one of my all time favourite authors too. I think 'On Green Dolphin Street' is my fave but I love 'Birdsong' and the rest too. Have you seen the mini-series of Birdsong?
Chocolat and Norah Jones are a couple of my loves too. :)

    1. Thanks for commenting, Adele! I haven't yet read On Green Dolphin Street, but I will be looking for it the next time I'm at the bookshop.

I LOVED the mini-series of Birdsong - I thought it communicated the story so well, considering it is such a long book. Have you read The Lollipop Shoes? It's the follow-up to Chocolat...

  3. You were right: I am jealous of those awesome meals. Except maybe for the Brussels sprouts. I'm not much of a fan of those. I'm also jealous you get to spend time at Museo del Prado. I visited a few years ago. We could only stay for a couple of hours and it wasn't nearly enough time.

Thanks for linking up with What I'm Into!

    1. Hi Leigh,

I'm so glad I found your link up; I love recapping the month. Re the Brussels sprouts, I think I'm lucky - I've always loved cruciferous vegetables! I do recommend the Chatelaine crunchy salad, the sprouts are so thiny sliced and mixed with other flavourful goodies that you can get the goodness without the strong flavour. My husband thought it was extra-crunchy lettuce (and that will remain the official party line). :)
